Description

If your borders are crying out for something bold, upright and blooming with energy, Eremurus 'Cleopatra' ticks every box. Commonly called Foxtail Lily, it sends up flame-coloured flower spikes that reach 2m tall, the sort of height that adds instant impact and architectural beauty to any planting scheme.

From late spring to early summer, each spire is smothered in starry copper-orange flowers. These blooms aren’t just a treat for the eyes, they’re packed with nectar and absolutely teeming with bees when in full bloom. If you’re planting for pollinators, this one’s a real winner.

Surprisingly, for all its grandeur, this perennial is a fuss-free grower. Give it a sunny, well-drained spot and it will happily return year after year. In fact, it improves with age, forming larger clumps over time and delivering even more wow-factor each season.

Eremurus looks sensational when teamed with other sun-lovers. Try it with airy grasses, spiky salvias, or rounded alliums for striking contrast and movement. It’s also a great choice for gravel gardens and big statement containers.

Supplied as a set of three bare roots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Plant alongside alliums, salvias or ornamental grasses for a naturalistic, high-impact display. Enjoy watching the bees make a beeline for those fiery orange spires every summer.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Unpack your bare roots immediately and check they are firm and healthy. It’s normal for them to look a bit unusual!
  • If the roots feel dry, soak them in lukewarm water for 1–2 hours to rehydrate before planting.
  • If you can’t plant straight away, store them in a cool, dry, frost-free place for a few days. Do not allow them to dry out completely.

How to Plant:

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Eremurus absolutely hate sitting in wet soil over winter, so good drainage is essential. Raised beds or gravel gardens work well.
  • Dig a wide planting hole and create a small mound in the centre. Gently spread the fleshy roots out across the mound like spokes on a wheel, with the crown sitting just below soil level, around 5cm deep.
  • Allow at least 30-40cm between each plant to give them space to grow.
  • Backfill with soil, water in lightly, and avoid compacting the soil directly over the crown. In heavy soils, consider mixing in grit or sand to improve drainage.
  • Mark the spot clearly so you don’t disturb the plant while it establishes.
