This stunning variety has stood the test of time, enchanting gardeners for years with extraordinary double flowers and romantic perfume. Each bloom is a masterpiece - huge, layered, and ruffled - a true showpiece plant that never fails to impress. Flowering in early summer, the display lasts for weeks, transforming borders and patios into a festival of colour and fragrance.

Despite the glamorous looks, this peony is surprisingly tough. It's fully hardy, shrugging off frost, and comes back stronger every spring. Over time, it builds into a large, upright clump of glossy green foliage, providing structure and presence in the border long after the flowers have gone.

One of the greatest joys of 'Sarah Bernhardt' is its versatility. The giant blooms are superb cut flowers, lasting beautifully in a vase. Pick a few tight buds before they open, and you'll have florist-quality arrangements indoors for days.

Supplied as a set of three bare roots, each with 2-3 eyes, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Peonies need winter cold and summer sun to produce flowers, so don't plant the crown deeper than 5cm below soil level.

Care Information

Despite the myths that surround them, peonies are easy to grow.
They need plenty of water as long as they don't get waterlogged, so plant your peonies in soil that drains well. Clay is fine as long as it doesn't stay wet.
Peonies flower at their best in full sun, but they will tolerate light shade.
Feed with a general fertiliser in spring, but avoid over-feeding with high nitrogen fertilisers.
To conserve moisture and suppress weeds, mulch around the crown with 5-7.5cm organic matter. Avoid covering the crown itself.
The flower stems may not be strong enough to keep the often-heavy flamboyant flowers upright and staking is often required.
It is generally best to cut the foliage to ground level as it dies back in the autumn to reduce risk of peony wilt.
Peonies seldom need to be divided or moved, but if necessary it should be carried out only in the autumn.

Our experienced team at the nursery will always carefully package and send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive once you receive and plant them. Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.
