Description

Peonies have always been the darlings of the garden world, but 'Rome' brings a fresh twist on tradition. Instead of towering giants that demand lots of space, this variety is compact, neat, and utterly charming. Exactly what smaller gardens and patios have been waiting for.

From late spring into early summer, 'Rome' bursts into bloom with extravagant sugar-pink double flowers, each releasing a spicy fragrance. Each blossom is generously packed with layers of silky petals, forming full, rounded blooms that look like they belong in a designer bouquet. Plant it once, and year after year you'll enjoy the same extraordinary display, each season outshining the last as the plant matures.

'Rome' is versatile, happy both in a pot on the patio or in a sunny border where it can play alongside other summer favourites. Its compact habit makes it practical too. No sprawling, no staking, just healthy, bushy growth that fits right where you need colour and impact. Despite its glamour, it's a hardy perennial that copes easily with changing winter conditions, quietly resting underground before bursting back to life each spring.

Top Tips

Be careful not to overwater newly planted Peonies, especially those that have been planted into decorative pots rather than the ground. They are best kept slightly on the dry side!

Care Information

Despite the myths that surround them, peonies are easy to grow.
They need plenty of water, but take care not to waterlog them, so plant your peonies in soil that drains well. Clay is fine as long as it doesn't stay wet.
Peonies flower at their best in full sun, but they will tolerate light shade too.
Feed with a general fertiliser in spring, but avoid over-feeding with high nitrogen fertilisers.
To conserve moisture and suppress weeds, mulch around the crown with 5-7.5cm (2-3in) organic matter. Avoid covering the crown itself.
The flower stems may not be strong enough to keep the often-heavy flamboyant flowers upright and staking is often required.
It is generally best to cut the foliage to ground level as it dies back in the autumn to reduce risk of peony wilt.
Peonies seldom need to be divided or moved, but if necessary it should be carried out only in the autumn.

Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.

For smaller and single-item orders, we may send these via the post with Royal Mail - Tracking will not be available for orders sent via this method.
