If there was an award for the most useful houseplant, then the diehard snake plant (Sansevieria) would certainly be one of the favourites. Also known as the Mother-in-laws tongue', the Snake plant has a secret side that makes it a must-have indoor plant.

Many gardeners have known for years that Sansevieria is a great plant for the bedroom, helping you to get a good, restful night's sleep, and now we know why.

Research by NASA has shown that one of their most useful features is their ability to keep the air inside your home clean, removing toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene, and giving out valuable oxygen at night.

With gorgeous, sword-like, mottled green leaves edged in golden yellow, the Snakeskin Plant lives up to its name and is a plant that's really easy to care for and maintain. Ideal for those of us who are short of time or tend to forget about looking after houseplants. Sansevieria are tolerant of neglect, going for weeks being ignored or forgotten, yet their strappy leaves still manage to look fresh and vibrant.

An ideal houseplant, the snake plant can survive in poor light, with little water, able to go extended periods without a drop, and is resilient to pest assault!

Top Tips

• Keep pot bound in a clay pot and you'll be rewarded with highly fragrant, jasmine-scented flowers in the summer.

Care Guide

• Best grown in a clay pot as the strong rhizomes will push plastic pots out of shape.
• Very tolerant of a wide range of conditions, Sansevieria will excel when grown near a bright east or south facing windowsill, out of direct sunlight.
• Allow the soil to dry between watering and take care not to over water in winter when the plants are relatively dormant.
• Repot only when the plant has filled its pot to capacity - you'll know it's time when the plant begins to force its way out of the existing container!
• Feed with a general-purpose plant food during the summer.

Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.
