Whether you’re looking to add a splash of colour to a dark and dingy corner to your garden or simply want to dot a couple of smaller plants around your patio, plants in pots add a new dimension to your growing garden. However, knowing which plants thrive in containers can be tricky, so we have created a guide to the best plants for pots to help you decide.

Containers for potted plants

First things first, you must choose a container that will allow your plants to grow to their maximum capability. Bigger pots have a greater impact and plants growing in them won’t dry out as quickly, but a smaller container will allow you to plant individual plants to dot around your garden where you see fit.

Whichever size pot you choose, always ensure that the container has a hole in the bottom, as this allows excess water to drain out and stop plants from drowning.

Arranging your plants for pots

When you're arranging your plants, you need to think about their height, shape and growth. Most plants are either upright, broad, or trailing; the most successful plant pot combinations usually include at least one of each form.

Begin by planting your tallest plant in the middle of your pot, and dot your smaller flowers and trailing plants around the remaining space. Generate energy and excitement by combining complementary colors such as purple and orange or yellow and blue, and remember to water in thoroughly.
