CARE INFORMATION

Top Tips

  • Soak the seeds overnight before sowing to aid germination.

  • They do well on poor, hungry soils and can withstand fairly dry conditions.
  • Edible: Nasturtium flowers and leaves can be added to salads and stir-fries.

Care Guide

How to grow Nasturtium ‘Alaska Salmon Orange’

  • Nasturtiums thrive in sandy, well-drained soil in a sunny position.
  • Sow outdoors, April to June, where they are to flower, 1.5cm (½in) deep, directly into finely prepared soil that has already been watered. Sow two seeds together every 20cm (8in). Seedlings usually appear in 21-28 days.
  • Remove the weaker plant, which can be transplanted elsewhere if desired. Or sow directly into compost in containers, baskets or window boxes. Water well until young plants are established.
  • Or sow indoors, February to March, for earlier flowers, 1.5cm (½in) deep, individually in small pots of compost.
  • Keep moist. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 30cm (12in) apart, or into containers, baskets or window boxes, when frosts are over.

Aftercare

  • Keep well-watered but allow the soil to dry out in between watering.
  • Allow foliage to die back after the flowering season is over as this will add valuable nutrients to the soil.
