Description
Kale is one of the easiest and hassle-free vegetables you can grow. This compact variety will provide you tasty and nutritious leaves over a long harvest from September through to March. If you leave your kale to flower, the yellow blooms will attract a whole host of wildlife to your garden. Delivered as a pack of 275 seeds. Sow outdoors January-May, or September-December.
Top Tips
  • Try growing alongside nasturtiums to keep Cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and with mint to repel beetles and other insect pests.
  • When harvesting, cut with a clean, sharp knife to avoid introducing disease or encouraging rot.
Care Information

How to grow Kale

  • Sow outdoors thinly in a seed bed, 1.5cm (½in) deep, directly into finely prepared soil that has already been watered. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Water well until plants are established. When seedlings are about 10cm (4in) tall, transplant into rows 45cm (18in) apart in moist but well-drained soil. Plant firmly and water well.
  • Or sow indoors 0.5cm (¼in) deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Keep moist. Transplant 5cm (2in) apart to other trays when large enough to handle. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions before planting out.
  • Harvest Pick a few leaves from each plant as required from when the plants are just 5cm (2in) tall; this will encourage new growth as long as you don’t cut the middle of the plant. The crown of the plant can be cut in December to encourage side shoots.
