How to grow Basil

• Sow indoors all year round for indoor crops and March to May for outdoor crops. Sow 0.5cm (¼in) deep, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. For outdoor crops, accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 20cm (8in) apart. Alternatively, plants can be grown on a light windowsill.
• Or sow outdoors, where they are to crop, 0.5cm (¼in) deep, directly into finely prepared soil that has already been watered. Thin seedlings to 20cm (8in) apart. For a continuous supply, make sowings every 2-3 weeks.
• Harvesting: Leaves are best picked immediately before use. (Outdoor crops from June).

Aftercare

• Protect outdoor seedlings from slugs.
• Keep the compost moist, allowing to almost dry out between watering. Do not over-water or allow pots to stand in excess water.
• Pick regularly to encourage new, young leaves to grow.
• Remove flowerheads as soon as they appear to prevent the plant from bolting.
• Feed regularly with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser to encourage new growth.

Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please allow us 5 - 7 working days to dispatch your order. If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.
