Care Guide

How to grow Squash

  • Sow indoors, March to May, for surest results, 1.5cm (in) deep, on edge, in small pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20C (60-68F) is ideal. Keep most. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 90cm (36in) apart, when frosts are over.
  • Or sow outdoors, where they are to crop, 1.5cm (in) deep, directly into finely prepared soil that has already been watered. Allow 90-150cm (36-60in) between sowing positions to allow for spread. Sow two seeds on edge per position. Early sowings benefit from cloche protection. Thin to leave the stronger plant. Water well until plants are established and once the first fruits start to grow, feed every 10-14 days with a high potash liquid fertiliser for optimum growth.
  • Harvest: September to October.
